Strengthening UK-China Commercial Links: Asia House UK Parliamentary Drop-In

On 11 February, Asia House held a drop-in session at the Houses of Parliament, allowing MPs to engage with UK businesses on the economic relationship with China. Supported by Pernod Ricard, the event followed Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ recent visit to Beijing and the UK government’s signals of a “new chapter” in UK-China relations.
As an independent think tank focused on trade and investment across Asia and the Middle East, Asia House plays a key role in fostering dialogue between policymakers and business leaders. The event gave MPs an impartial, evidence-based perspective on the UK’s economic ties with China, emphasising pragmatic and constructive engagement.
Hosted by Tony Vaughan MP and Alan Gemmell MP, the session facilitated discussions on the importance of informed, strategic engagement with China and balancing economic opportunities with wider policy considerations.
Asia Minister Catherine West MP was also in attendance and engaged with business leaders and policymakers. The event underscored China’s significance as the UK’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at £92.9 billion in 2023. UK exports to China support around half a million jobs across the country. Asia House forecasts that China’s economy will grow by 4% in 2025, MPs heard from businesses about emerging opportunities in financial services, green energy, and technology.
Asia House remains committed to providing impartial insights and fostering informed discussions on UK-Asia trade, ensuring policymakers can access expert analysis and business perspectives.
