Nezar Patria, Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Communication and Digital, briefed Asia House Corporate Members on Indonesia’s digital transformation priorities and its growing role in regional and global tech policy at an off-the-record briefing on Thursday 12 June.

Speaking at Asia House, Vice Minister Patria outlined Indonesia’s national digital strategy, which aims to scale up innovation, improve connectivity across its vast archipelago, and grow the digital economy significantly as a portion of GDP. Key priorities include upskilling 9 million workers in the digital sector (approximately 30% of which has already been achieved), enhancing digital inclusion and creating a secure tech ecosystem.

A central focus of the discussion was Indonesia’s AI roadmap and its approach to balancing innovation with governance. The government has released papers on AI ethics and digital regulation and is actively reviewing policies to keep pace with rapidly evolving technologies. Agreements with the US, Japan, India, China, and South Korea reflect Indonesia’s intent to collaborate globally and learn from diverse innovation models.

Asia House Corporate Members engaged in a dynamic discussion, exploring topics such as smart cities, AI governance, SME support, and data processing. Vice Minister Patria emphasised the need for stronger international partnerships to fuel innovation and digital growth.

Chaired by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE, the session offered timely insights into Indonesia’s digital transformation and its growing influence in the global tech landscape.
