Asia House Briefing with Minister Hamish Falconer: UK’s Middle East Strategy and Economic Engagement

Asia House welcomed Hamish Falconer MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan), for a private briefing with Corporate Members this morning.

Minister Falconer outlined the UK government’s approach to the Middle East and its progress in navigating an increasingly complex political landscape. He provided insights into the recently announced Israel-Palestine ceasefire and the broader diplomatic challenges in navigating the crisis. The Minister also discussed the recent regime change in Syria, assessing its impact on regional stability and UK foreign policy priorities.

The discussion extended to Yemen and Lebanon, where Minister Falconer highlighted the UK’s role in supporting peace efforts and responding to economic challenges. He also discussed UK-US strategic cooperation in the region.

With the Labour government’s focus on economic growth, Minister Falconer spoke about the UK’s deepening trade and investment ties with GCC countries, including the ongoing negotiations for a UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement (FTA). He also provided reflections on outcomes from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit to the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
