With the end of the Brexit transition period approaching, there are clear signs that Asia will be a priority region for the UK as it reshapes its global engagement strategy.

The UK recently sought status as an independent Dialogue Partner of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and has made clear its intention to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).  Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab also made the region the destination for his first major ministerial tour, with visits to Australia, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia. However, the Asia-Pacific also presents challenges for the UK, with relations with China coming under strain and trade deals still needing to be struck with regional partners.

Nigel Adams, Minister for Asia at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, will brief Asia House Corporate Members on the UK’s strategy in the Asia-Pacific, and the broader trade and geopolitical landscape in the region. Adams will also outline the UK’s wider role in a fast-moving and uncertain global policy environment.

Adams, who serves as MP for Selby and Ainsty, was appointed as a Minister for Asia in February 2020.
