Peter Wilson CMG, British Ambassador-Designate to the People’s Republic of China, will brief Asia House Corporate Members on the UK’s strategic engagement with China during an exclusive, off-the-record session at Asia House on Thursday 3 July, ahead of his departure to Beijing.

Speaking at Asia House, Wilson will share insights into the future direction of UK-China relations at a time of heightened geopolitical complexity and economic interdependence. Drawing on his extensive diplomatic experience, including previous postings at the UN and the FCDO, Wilson will offer a forward-looking perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing British diplomacy in China.

The session will explore key policy areas including trade and investment, green finance, digital and technological cooperation, and regional security. Wilson will also reflect on the UK government’s priorities in the Indo-Pacific and the evolving role of China within the global multilateral system.

Peter Wilson CMG was Director General for Europe at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office until August 2024. He was Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister in 2022 and previously held ambassadorial roles in Brazil, the Netherlands (also representing the UK at the OPCW), and at the UN in New York. His earlier career included senior roles in Beijing, Islamabad, Brussels, and London, focusing on Asia-Pacific, EU affairs, and strategic policy.

This off-the-record briefing, moderated by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE, offers Corporate Members a timely opportunity to engage directly with the incoming Ambassador as he prepares to take up one of the UK’s most strategically significant diplomatic posts.
