The Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP, Chair of the UK Parliament’s Business and Trade Committee, will brief Asia House Corporate Members on the UK government’s trade and investment priorities during an exclusive, off-the-record session on Thursday 26 June.
Speaking at Asia House, Byrne will outline how the UK is navigating an increasingly turbulent global trade environment, shaped by the return of President Trump and the reimposition of US tariffs. Drawing on insights from his role as Chair of one of Parliament’s most influential committees, Byrne will offer an in-depth perspective on how the UK is responding to rising economic volatility and shifting global trade dynamics.
The session will also explore the Committee’s recent findings as the government pursues its ambition to become the G7’s fastest-growing economy and to deepen its trade relationships worldwide. Byrne will provide updates on current trade negotiations – including with India and the US - and reflect on the UK’s engagement with ASEAN, China and the EU.
In addition, Byrne will reflect on the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which came into force in December 2024, and discuss its early impact and implementation.
This off-the-record briefing, moderated by Asia House Chief Executive Michael Lawrence OBE, offers Corporate Members a valuable opportunity to engage directly with a key Labour figure scrutinising the UK’s evolving trade and investment strategy.
