When John Russell Brown first saw Oh Tae Suk's
production of Romeo
and Juliet in Seoul, he found it unexpectedly both entertaining
and
moving, and it made him ask, 'Can Shakespeare and his plays be
popular once again in this country? What could actors, directors,
designers
and theatre managers do to win a broadly based audience? How should
subsidies be spent?'
The power of this Romeo and Juliet comes from its master director
who
is also a playwright and teacher and is in charge of his own company.
Oh Tae Suk produces plays for his own time and place with no thought
of the international market place. They are obviously theatrical
and
fantastic yet, at the same time, they reflect life on the streets
outside
the theatre. John Russell Brown will examine the essential elements
in
Oh Tae Suk’s work, with particular reference to his Romeo
and Juliet
brought here by Asia House playing at the Pit, Barbican Centre from
