The Shan States together comprise 160,000 square
kilometres,
almost a quarter of the country known today as Myanmar or
The Union of Burma. This lecture will tell the fascinating story
of the ancient culture of the Shan people who inhabit the upland
valleys. Until the mid twentieth century they were ruled by princes
who for at least six hundred years had maintained diplomatic
relations with China, Burma and Siam and later with Britain
and France. The Shan courts were lavishly furnished with textiles
and gilded furniture and court dress and regalia was equally
impressive. The lecture will also feature Shan religious architecture,
sculpture and textiles.
Dr. Susan Conway is a Research Associate at the School of Oriental
and African Studies. Her book on Shan culture, arts and crafts,
published this year, resulted from five years research and field
work.
This lecture is in association with the Anglo Thai Society.
