Lecture
South Korean Artists’ Response
to the Issue of Divided Korea
Lecture by Jim Hoare and Jiyoon Lee
Monday 11 December at Asia House
Doors 6.30. Lecture 6.45-7.45pm

As part of our programme related to our exhibition, Through the
Looking Glass: Korean Contemporary Art, this discussion will centre
on the impact the divided Korea has had on the art practice of Korean
artists. Jim Hoare will begin with a lecture giving an overview of North
Korea; its recent history, present situation and current impact on South
Korea and the international community. Jiyoon Lee will present a selection
of Korean contemporary artists and discuss how their works have responded
to the division, geographical but also psychological, of Korea. She will focus particularly on work that has been produced by a new generation of artists
since the socio-propogandic art movement, Minjoong Art, which took place
in the 1980s.

Jim Hoare was a member of the Research Cadre of HM Diplomatic
Service from 1969 until his retirement in January 2003, serving in Seoul
and Beijing and finally as British chargé d'affaires in Pyongyang. He has
written a number of books on East Asian matters, and currently lectures,
writes and broadcasts, mainly on Korea. Jiyoon Lee is an independent
curator, writer and teacher and has curated Through the Looking Glass
at Asia House.
