Internships at Asia House

Asia House is the premier pan-Asian organisation in Britain, promoting a greater understanding of the rich and varied Asian cultures and economies. In addition to Asia House’s own membership programme and activities, it is also home to a number of bilateral societies centred on Asia.

As a result, Asia House is a lively centre that organises approximately 125 events annually covering Asian business, politics , current affairs, literature and the visual and performing arts. These events fall into two categories – corporate and cultural – both of which offer internship placements.

In addition to assisting with events, interns will have the opportunity to learn and develop skills by becoming involved with the other work that keeps Asia House so vibrant.

Assisting with the organisation of events

A large part of an intern’s work is to assist in the organisation and execution of events.

This role will vary depending on which side of the organisation you are working with. However, both involve administrative work, including filing, sending out invitations, mailing information, printing badges and place cards, preparing guest lists, getting in touch with guests to confirm their attendance and working at the event itself.

Some events take place in the evening and you will be required to stay late. You will help in the overall staging of the event – setting up the relevant room, arranging refreshments, preparing tea and coffee, taking tickets on the door and selling any merchandise connected to the event. This provides a valuable learning experience.

Assisting with membership and marketing

You will help process applications and members’ renewals by creating and maintaining records on the database, sending out membership letters, preparing invoices, chasing payments, banking cheques and so on.

You will also help devise ways to meet our membership targets by investigating new members’ benefits and researching like-minded organisations that might be approached. In addition, you will build up the database for the distribution of Asia House’s marketing material by extending our list of suitable contacts and organisations.

Assisting with the websites and the press

You will prepare material for our website and for press liaison – including press releases, Photoshop pictures, summaries and descriptions of events and activities – and will liaise with external parties to upload/publish that information.

In addition to these tasks, you will be encouraged to develop any special interests you might have. Your time at Asia House will provide excellent experience of working in a diverse office environment, learning about the administrative work that goes into organising business and cultural events.

Requirements

  • Full-time interns for a period of 12 weeks preferred; minimum commitment: two days a week.
  • Good knowledge of computers including Excel, Word, mail merge, the internet.
  • Reliability, confidence dealing with the public and an excellent knowledge of written English.
Internships are unsalaried, but travel and luncheon allowances are provided.
