EDUCATION AND LEARNING AT ASIA HOUSE

Asia House provides a lively, engaging and interactive education programme for primary and secondary schools and colleges. It can be tailored to match all key stages and particular subject and curriculum areas – for example, art, citizenship, English, drama, design & technology.

Education at Asia House is designed to enrich and enliven each educational establishment’s own curriculum while opening up exciting new avenues for learning about Asian culture, history and religion.

Activities
Cross-cultural understanding is promoted through wide-ranging and accessible art workshops, projects and study days centred on aspects of Asian arts and culture. A wide variety of methods are used to explore and investigate: discussion, observation, varied practical art sessions, activity sheets, creative writing and more. Access to Asian artists allows students to enter a wider creative dialogue involving a broad interplay of ideas and inspiration.

These activities are often related to the rolling programme of exhibitions at the Asia House Gallery.

Participants
Colleges and universities that have participated in the programme include University College London (including the Slade School of Fine Art), the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and Birkbeck College, the University of Hertfordshire and the Prince's School of Traditional Arts.

We also run activities in partnership with other organisations. For example, we worked with Akademi, focusing on areas such as Indian dance from classical to modern street fusions and Bollywood.

While most of our education work is based at Asia House, outreach projects are also developed. Examples of off-site work include Asian dance workshops and mural painting in schools.

INSET training can be arranged, and resource packs for teachers are available in conjunction with each exhibition.

"The pupils really enjoyed their days. We thought both workshops were very well organised – the resources were excellent and the activities different to those they were able to complete at school."

Primary Teacher (Art Coordinator), Westminster

"After briefly seeing the year 4 and 5 teachers, both said what a wonderful day both classes had, thank you! It was excellent – no negative points at all!"
