Routes & Remedies

Asian wisdom for living in London
A multimedia exhibition at Asia House
30 September to 7 October 2006

This multimedia showcase – held at Asia House and funded by the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England – highlighted the living traditions of Asian medicine and well-being.

Visitors were able to take part in taster sessions and demonstrations on a wide variety of subjects, including yoga, massage, martial arts, acupuncture and food.

The team responsible for this project was based at the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at University College London.

Dr Vivienne Lo, lecturer on the history of Chinese medicine, explained: ‘With a team made up of London-based Asian artists, designers, parents, health workers, body artists and cooks, we have been capturing traditional techniques of health and well-being preserved among Asian communities based in the UK.’

Schools and communities

School and community groups were introduced to a selection of principles and philosophies linked to Asian health and well-being.

Among the activities available were:

  • tongue diagnosis and complexion diagnosis
  • forms of physical exercise such as t’ai chi and chi-gung
  • massage practice and meditation
  • tasting sessions of health-giving foods
  • creative art sessions with artist Chila Burman and Eric Fong using images and activities associated with Asian medicine, food and family life to enable young people to express their own ideas and experiences.

The schools involved in this education programme were St Clement Danes Primary, Argyle Primary, Queens College Preparatory and South Camden Community School.
