This stimulating programme is organised by Birkbeck, part of the University of London. It delivers opportunities for the study of arts and artefacts from a wide range of Asian cultural traditions, geographical regions and historical periods.
Each of the courses can be taken purely for interest and enjoyment or applied towards a certificate or diploma.

Revered for its strength, beauty and versatility, paper has profoundly influenced Japanese culture, tradition and psyche, and today is a sought-after medium for artists and top fashion designers. In this practical module, you will learn about the significance of paper in Japanese society and be taught how to make simple papers decorated with petals, leaves and gold. You will also design kites, lanterns and masks and produce the artwork for them.

India has one of the richest and most diverse textile traditions in the world. In this practical module, you will explore the ancient history of Indian textiles, as well as learning about exciting contemporary textile and fashion designers such as Rita Kumar and Asha Sarahbhai. You will produce your own samples of embroidery, mirror work, kalamkari, appliqué and block printing, with sessions focusing on technique, allowing the development of practical work alongside reading and discussion.
