Early Landscapes of Myanmar

Elizabeth Moore, author of Early Landscapes of Myanmar, will give an
anecdotal tour through some of the many places surveyed in the making
of the book. The volume is the first to focus exclusively on the importance
of human-environment relationships in the prehistory of the country,
considering the complementary roles of the arid plains of and the high
-rainfall coast of the peninsula. The time line runs from the circa 10,000
BC Stone Age to the first millennium AD emergence of some the earliest
Buddhist sites in Southeast Asia. The illustrated talk will cover pre-Buddhist
landscapes, sites and artefacts featured in the book such Shwezayan east
of Mandalay, Letpanchibaw on the Ayeyarwaddy River, Htaukmagon-
Moegyobyin, Hsinbykyun near Thaton, Mon State and Early Buddhist places
including Tagaung, Beikthano and Sriksetra in Upper Myanmar.

Dr Elizabeth Moore is the Head of the Art and Archaeology Department
and Senior Lecturer in Southeast Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS.
She has published widely on the relationship of humans and the landscape, documenting the integration of Hindu-Buddhist norms in Cambodia,
Thailand and Myanmar. Her previous books include Palaces of the Gods –
Khmer Art and Architecture in Thailand, Ancient Capitals of Thailand and
Shwedagon – Golden Pagoda of Myanmar.
