The 2006 Man Booker Prize winner talks about her book, The Inheritance
of Loss. Set at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga, Desai explores the lives
of an embittered old judge, his orphaned granddaughter and those who
daily intersect their lives. When a Nepalese insurgency threatens their way
of life, they are forced to consider their colliding interests. Using beautiful
language and imagery, Desai brilliantly portrays the interplay between the
characters as they face loss, grief, unfulfillment and the challenges of
a strange culture.

Kiran Desai was born in Chandigarh and spent her childhood in Pune
and Mumbai. Her first novel, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard (1998),
received accolades from such notable figures as Salman Rushdie and
won the Betty Trask Award.
The Inheritance of Loss has been widely praised by critics throughout
Asia, Europe and the United States and won the 2006 Man Booker Prize
as well as the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Fiction Award.
