Pankaj Mishra talks about his two wonderful books
just launched in
paperback. In Butter Chicken in Ludhiana, he captured, with irony
and humour, the people of small town India, rushing headlong to
their
tryst with modernity. Acutely observed and rendered with insight
and biting
wit, this is a contemporary classic, now revised and featuring a
new
introduction by the author.
‘A love-letter to the real republic. No other book defines
as clearly,
and with such troubled irony, our last decade of change.’
Amitava Kumar
In his more recent Temptations of the West, Mishra explores this
diversity
in all its forms. In a narrative as revealing as it is profound,
he dissolves
the old boundaries between East and West, challenging every romantic
cliche about the conflicts and dilemmas at the heart of the modern
world.
‘Mishra offers a compelling blend of memoir, narrative history,
politics,
religion and philosophy. Thoughtful, intelligent and rigorous, this
is a
deep, insightful study of the very notion of modernity.’

The talk will be followed by a reception kindly sponsored by Picador.
