For centuries, weaving has been an integral part
of Laotian culture.
Celebrated weaver and development advisor Carol Cassidy has brought
a new vitality to this heritage and industry through building on
the
traditional designs and techniques of skilled weavers from ethnic
groups
within Laos. In 1989, she was sent to Laos by the UN to advise on
weaving
and design. In 1990, she and her husband founded Lao Textiles, which
has
contributed to the restoration of Lao weaving to prominence in the
world
textile markets. The company provides employee pension and medical
benefits, bringing economic empowerment to Lao women. Carol recently
took over a similar project in Cambodia.
In this talk, she will share her social entrepreneurship experiences
in
Southeast Asia as well as show a range of work from Lao Textiles.
Carol Cassidy has been working with textiles for over three decades.
Her work has been exhibited around the world. She advises the UN
and
other development agencies on income generating activities for rural
women. She also lectures on weaving and small business management,
sharing her personal model for success with weavers and artisans
around
the world.
