Talented young Malaysian filmmaker Bernard Chauly
graduated with an
MA in TV Drama from Goldsmiths College, University of London. His
critically
acclaimed work includes a short film Adam & Steve, documentary
Wayang
Kulit, which won prizes at the Malaysian Video Awards, two telemovies
for
ntv7, Piala Untuk Mama and Multimedia Super Cintun and two feature
films,
Gol & Gincu (2005) and Goodbye Boys (2006).
Malaysia’s film industry is considerably younger than those
of neighbouring
Asian countries and is often marginalised and overshadowed by the
relative
giants of India, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Thailand. Its
rapid
growth in the last couple of years means that this situation could
be about
to change. Bernard Chauly will trace the history and trajectories
of Malaysian
cinema to the present day, focussing on the ten or so filmmakers
who have
changed the landscape of independent and mainstream Malaysian cinema,
both locally and abroad. He will also present two Saturday double
bills on
16th and 23rd June which will explore two significant themes: youth
culture;
and the influences of Islam in a multicultural society.
