Through a lively series of biographical portraits,
Francis Robinson will
describe the rulers from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries
whose
reigns and lands were affected by Mongol/Mughal power. These sultans,
shahs, emperors and khans all shared the Muslim persianate high
civilisation that flourished from Iran and Central Asia through
Afghanistan
to north and central India. Among the prominent leaders he will
discuss
are Timur, who lived a life of remorseless conquest, Shah Abbas
the Great,
who brought the achievement of early modern Iran to its peak at
Isfahan,
and Shah Jahan, who gave India its finest monument, the Taj Mahal.
Professor Robinson will give insight into the history and culture
of key
Islamic dynasties - highly relevant in today’s geopolitics
- which will aid
in a greater understanding of Islam in today’s world.
Francis Robinson is a Professor of the History of South Asia at
London
University and author of numerous books on the Islamic world, among
them: The Mughal Emperors, The Ulama of Farangi Mahall and Islamic
Culture in South Asia and The Cambridge Illustrated History of the
Islamic World.
