The performance Gesar of Ling is based
on the world’s longest (and
reputedly oldest) epic poem, popular throughout most of Central
Asia but
particularly loved by Tibetans. And like the Arthurian legends,
there is no
single version of King Gesar’s superhuman deeds. Over the
centuries, the
Gesar bards and storytellers have developed a rich and fascinating
oral
tradition which is still elaborated to this day.
Phuntsog Wangyal (Founder, former Director and current trustee of
the
Tibet Foundation), and Dr Yang Enhong (Senior Researcher of the
Chinese
Academy of Social Sciences) will provide an introduction and background
to
Gesar of Ling. This will be followed by excerpts of the legend demonstrated
by the Sertar-Gesar troupe from Kandze Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan
Province. The Sertar-Gesar troupe was established 20 years ago in
the
south-east of the Qinghai Tibetan plateau. They have performed throughout
the Tibet region and are recognised as one of the best troupes in
China.
This is their first visit to the UK.
