In association with Friends of the Royal
Asiatic Society, Hong Kong Branch
and the China Society, Asia House presents a lecture by author Susanna
Hoe. At midnight on 30 June 1997 Hong Kong reverted to Chinese
sovereignty after 150 years of British rule. Ten years after this
dramatic
moment when she watched the flag came down, Susanna Hoe talks about
her experiences as an Englishwoman living in Hong Kong in the ten
years
leading up to 1997. Her book is both an unusual historical record
and
a heart-warming account of women’s domestic, intellectual
and political
activity in Hong Kong.
Susanna Hoe has lived half of her life abroad: in Kenya, Switzerland,
Italy,
Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong, which has encouraged her interest
in
writing about women, mostly British, who have lived in foreign places.
Watching the Flag Come Down: An Englishwoman in Hong Kong, 1987-97
is Susanna Hoe’s twelfth published book and her sixth on the
region.
