Women’s Voices Lecture
Chinese Migrant Women
Lecture by Xinran
Thursday 12 July at Asia House
Doors 6.30, Lecture 6.45-7.45pm
Followed by reception

Xinran has become known for her wonderful ability to take readers to
the heart of Chinese society and is recognised for her ‘unforgettable
insights into the past and present of Chinese women’s lives.’ In her talk,
she will discuss her experiences with female migrant workers in China
and her latest novel on the subject, Miss Chopsticks. It is an uplifting
tale of three sisters, who like so many migrant workers in today’s China,
leave their peasant community to seek fortune in the big city. As the
Li sisters discover Nanjing, Xinran also uncovers it for her readers: its
past, its customs and culture, and its future as a place where people
can change their lives.

Xinran was born in Beijing in 1958 and was a successful journalist and
radio presenter in China. Since moving to London in 1997, she has written
a number of bestselling novels, including The Good Women of China, has
a regular column in the Guardian and makes frequent public appearances
on both radio and TV.

The talk will be followed by a reception kindly sponsored by Random House.
