Alan Macfarlane will speak about Japanese
society from the most public
to the most intimate aspects. He will discuss his series of meticulous
investigations conducted while in Japan in order to write his most
recent
book, Japan Through the Looking Glass. This book attempts to aid
in
gradually uncovering the multi-faceted nature of the country and
people
of Japan. Topics will range from religion to manners, from geishas
and
gangs to money, art and imperialism.
Alan Macfarlane is Professor of Anthropology at Cambridge University.
He is the author of 16 books including The Glass Bathyscaphe and
Letters
to Lily.
The talk will be followed by a drinks reception and Japanese canapés.
