GO-GO NIGHTS
Wednesdays 8 / 15 / 22 / 29 March
6.30 – 8.00pm at Asia House

Asia House launches a series of fun and informal GO evenings that promise
to knock Sudoku off the number one spot as Japan’s current favourite
export. GO experts will be on hand to talk you through the rules of this
strategy game and help show you how you play. Come along for a social
evening at Asia House with drinks and GO playing. Come on your own,
come with friends for a great evening out in more pleasant surroundings
than the above popular club in downtown Tokyo. Absolute beginners
to GO champions – all welcome.

Although GO originated in central Asia, historically the game flourished
in Japan where it was introduced around 740 AD. Initially confined to court
circles, it gradually spread to the Buddhist and Shinto clergy, then to the
Samurai then took root with the rest of Japanese society. Also hugely
popular in China and Korea, finally GO has reached our shores.

The rules of GO are very simple. Like chess, it is a game of skill but with
GO there is scope for intuition and the personalities of the players emerge
very clearly on the GO board. The aim is to gain territory but one of the
subtleties of GO is that aggression doesn't always pay. The strategic
and tactical possibilities of the game are endless, providing a challenge
and enjoyment to players at every level.
