Kabuki is one of the most dazzlingly colourful
and spectacular of the world’s
performing arts. Kabuki incorporates elements of dance, music and
drama
to create plays that straddle the divide between theatrical realism
and
stylisation. To tie in with performances by the young Kabuki superstar
Ichikawa Ebizo at Sadlers Wells in June, this lecture will introduce
the
historical and social background to kabuki, as well as examining
some
of the means by which it casts its beguiling and seductive spell.
Alan Cummings lectures in Japanese literature and theatre at the
School
of Oriental & African Studies, University of London. He has
worked at the
Kabuki-za and National Theatre in Tokyo, providing earphone commentaries
for kabuki plays. He has also translated several kabuki plays into
English.
