MY FAVOURITE ASIAN FILM –
HAPPY TOGETHER BY WONG KAR-WEI, 1997

INTRODUCED BY ROGER CLARKE
Wednesday 17 May, 6.30pm at Asia House

Not happy and not necessarily together, lovers Fai (Tony Leung) and Ho
Po-Wing (the late Leslie Cheung), arrive in Buenos Aires from Hong Kong
at the time of Hong Kong’s return to China, hoping to make a fresh start.
As aliens stranded in a foreign land, Happy Together asks how the two will
survive, together or apart, against a backdrop of dislocation which ultimately
leads to them settling old scores with their parents and their homeland.

The first in our series, My Favourite Asian Film, will be introduced by Roger
Clarke, film columnist and critic for the Independent Newspaper since 1999.
He has written for all the major newspapers and reviews and writes lead
features for Sight & Sound. In January 2005 he was on the jury of the BBC4
World Cinema Awards chaired by Jonathan Ross. He is currently writing the
Rough Guide to World Cinema and is a published poet, short story writer
and librettist.
