UNDERSTANDING DECORATION IN CHINESE ART

LECTURE BY ROSEMARY SCOTT
Tuesday 16 May 2006, 6.30-7.30pm at Asia House

Rosemary Scott, Senior Academic Consultant to the Asian Art departments
at Christie’s, will introduce our series on collecting and connoisseurship with
a discussion of the decorative techniques used in Chinese art. The motifs
used on the Chinese decorative arts are not only beautiful but also contain
a wealth of meaning that is not always immediately apparent to the casual
viewer. This lecture will discuss some of the symbols, rebuses and stories
that are used to decorate Chinese ceramics and lacquer wares.

This occasional series is aimed at anyone with an interest in the rich
and varied art of Asia who may own a few pieces or is considering starting
a collection. Over coming months we will be looking at various art forms
including jewellery, textiles, and Indian miniatures.
