The Percival David Foundation houses the finest
collection of Chinese
ceramics outside China. It consists of around 1,700 objects dating
from
the Song to the Qing dynasties, including examples of the very rare
Ru
and Guan wares. The collection reflects Chinese court taste and
a number
of the objects were previously in the possession of Chinese emperors.
Many of their pieces are not only of exceptional beauty but bear
important
inscriptions and are historical items of immense value.
Dr Stacey Pierson is the curator of the Percival David Foundation
and
she will talk about the history of the collection. Her lecture will
consider
the legacy of Sir Percival David and his collection, particularly
his role
in shaping and defining the field of Chinese ceramics in Britain.
The framework for the discussion will be the major events of David’s
collecting career: the establishment of a degree course in Chinese
art in 1930; the directorship of the International Exhibition of
Chinese
Art in 1935 and the founding of the only museum of Chinese ceramics
outside China in 1950.
This event is presented in association with The China Society
and will be followed by sandwiches and refreshments.
