LECTURE
Two Steps Forward One Step Back:
Contemporary Art in Pakistan since 1980
Lecture by Naazish Ata-Ullah
Monday 25 September at Asia House
Doors 6.30pm. Lecture 6.45-7.45pm

In post-colonial Pakistan, the development of the contemporary neo-
miniature art movement has impacted on contemporary art in multiple
ways. The movement’s genesis occurred at the National College of Arts
(NCA), Lahore where Professor Zahoor ul Akhlaq (1941-1999) was its
principle architect. All of the artists featured in Asia House’s exhibition
Beyond the Page: Contemporary Art from Pakistan were trained at the NCA
and this lecture will examine the context within which they have worked.
Naazish Ata-Ullah will also discuss the evolution of diverse means of
expression over the last twenty-five years in Pakistan.

Naazish Ata-Ullah is Associate Professor in the Department of Fine
Art at the NCA, Lahore. She is an artist, writer and curator.
