This talk will demonstrate how East Asian values
can play a key role in
fomenting world values. In her work Dr Koh has identified that sources
of strength, dynamism, and creativity come from inherited Asian
ancestral values and can also come from the rich experience of living
in diverse societies. She will show how these qualities can serve
broader
human causes.
Leaders are made, not born. Authentic leaders demonstrate common
characteristics, which Dr Koh has identified in her best selling
book as
the seven tenets of authentic leadership in a multicultural society
(Authentic Leadership in Multicultural Society, Random House Joongang,
2006). Cultural competency (the ability to live in more than one
culture),
the superiority of virtue over skill, self-fulfilment through role
dedication,
creative synchronism, and feelings such as compassion and passion
are
critical strengths that can empower leaders.
In this third stage of globalization, specialists assert that individuals,
not corporations or countries, will be the major forces of change
in the world.
A thoughtful analysis of Asian cultural experiences can offer insights
into the values necessary to inspire changes, changes that will
benefit all mankind.
Dr Hesung Chun Koh is Chair of East Rock Institute and Director

and she is also on the panel of judges for the National Endowment
for
the Humanities. Dr Koh has devoted her life to promoting cultural
