FASHION SHOW
Malaysian Style
Talk by Tom Abang Saufi followed by fashion show
Tuesday 12 September at Asia House
Doors 6.30. Event 6.45-7.45pm, followed by reception

A graduate of the London School of Fashion, Tom Abang Saufi is one
of Malaysia’s premier designers. She uses the traditional styles of Malaysian
costume as her starting point and adds a thoroughly modern, international
twist. Her firm national identity is reflected in her use of indigenous weaving
and dying techniques: batik prints are a recurring theme; and one particularly
successful knitwear collection was based on the Pua Kumbu (cotton blankets)
of the Iban tribe of Sarawak. With her flamboyant sense of colour and
design, Tom Abang Saufi’s designs are set to capture the imagination
of the Western market.

Tom Abang Saufi will present a background to her work in the context
of her national heritage. Models will display some of Tom’s work, and
she will demonstrate traditional tying techniques.
